William Brown (bridge designer) is a British bridge designer and engineer who has been designing bridges since the 1950s. He is best known for his work on the Severn Bridge, which spans the River Severn between England and Wales. Brown was born in 1928 in London, England. He studied engineering at the University of London and graduated in 1951. After graduation, he worked for the Ministry of Transport and then for the British Railways Board. Brown's first major bridge project was the Severn Bridge, which was completed in 1966. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time and is still the second longest in the United Kingdom. Brown also designed the Humber Bridge, which opened in 1981 and is the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. Brown has received numerous awards for his work, including the Royal Academy of Engineering's Silver Medal in 1975 and the Institution of Civil Engineers' Telford Medal in 1982. He was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1985. Brown is now retired and lives in London. He is 77 years old.
