William Buckland was an English geologist, palaeontologist, and clergyman who became a Fellow of the Royal Society at the age of 25. He was a pioneering geologist who first described and named the geological strata now known as the Devonian period. He was an early proponent of uniformitarianism, the idea that the Earth's features were formed by slow, gradual processes over long periods of time. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and papers on geology, palaeontology, and theology. Buckland was born on 12 March 1784 in Axminster, Devon, England. He was educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton and then at Oxford University, where he studied mathematics, classics, and theology. He was ordained as a priest in 1808 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1813. Buckland's geological work began in 1811 when he was appointed as Reader in Mineralogy at Oxford. He was the first to describe and name the Devonian period, and he also made important contributions to the study of fossils, stratigraphy, and sedimentology. He was a strong proponent of uniformitarianism, the idea that the Earth's features were formed by slow, gradual processes over long periods of time. Buckland was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and papers on geology, palaeontology, and theology. His most famous work was his 1836 book, Geology and Mineralogy Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, which argued that the Earth's features were evidence of a divine creator. Buckland died on 23 August 1856 in Oxford, England. He is remembered as one of the most important geologists of the 19th century.
