William David Powell is an American television producer and director. He was born on February 27, 1925 in California, U.S. He is best known for his work on the television series The Waltons, which he produced and directed from 1972 to 1981. Powell began his career in television in the 1950s, working as a production assistant on shows such as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and The Jack Benny Program. He then moved on to directing episodes of shows such as The Donna Reed Show, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. In 1972, Powell was hired to produce and direct The Waltons, a show about a family living in rural Virginia during the Great Depression. The show was a huge success, and Powell remained with the show until its end in 1981. Powell has also directed episodes of shows such as Little House on the Prairie, Highway to Heaven, and Touched by an Angel. He has also produced and directed several made-for-TV movies, including The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, which was the pilot for The Waltons. Powell is now retired and lives in California. He is 93 years old.
