William Mayne was an English author of children's books. He wrote over 100 books, including the Chrestomanci series, which won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1977. He was born in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, UK on 16 March 1928. He was educated at the University of Hull and the University of London. Mayne was a prolific writer, and his books were translated into many languages. He wrote for both children and adults, and his works often featured fantasy and magic. He was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1971 for his novel A Swarm in May. He was also awarded the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1977 for Charmed Life, the first book in the Chrestomanci series. Mayne died on 28 April 2005 at the age of 77. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. His net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be around £1 million.
