Porter attended the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the track and field team. He competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, where he finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. He also competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where he finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. In addition to his Olympic appearances, Porter also competed in the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, where he won a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles. He also won a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay. Porter has been inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame. Porter is married to his wife, Mary, and they have two children. He currently resides in Jackson, Michigan.
