William R. Ferrante is an American educator and former president of the University of Rhode Island. He was born on March 9, 1928 in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended the University of Rhode Island, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1950 and a master's degree in education in 1952. Ferrante began his career as a teacher and principal in the East Providence School System. He then served as the assistant superintendent of schools in East Providence from 1965 to 1969. In 1969, he was appointed as the president of the University of Rhode Island, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure as president, Ferrante oversaw the expansion of the university's academic programs, the construction of new buildings, and the establishment of the Graduate School of Oceanography. He also served as the president of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges from 1983 to 1984. Ferrante has received numerous awards and honors, including the Rhode Island Governor's Medal of Excellence in Education, the University of Rhode Island Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges' Distinguished Service Award. Ferrante was born in the Providence, Rhode Island and graduated in 1945 from La Salle Academy in Providence. He earned his BS in electrical engineering from Rhode Island State College in 1949, and MS in applied mathematics in 1919 at Brown University. He went on to get his PhD in engineering mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. After a brief career beginning in 1962 as a professional engineer with Boeing in Seattle, Washington and with Allis-Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a brief stint teaching engineering at Virginia Tech, he joined the faculty at the University of Rhode Island in the Department of Mechanical Engineering where he remained for forty years. He was twice named acting president of the University of Rhode Island, in 1974 and 1983, and served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1972 to 1988. He also served as dean of the graduate school and chair of the Faculty Senate. Ferrante died 14 June 2014 in Providence.
