William Young was born in 1940 in Huntington, New York, United States. He attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1965. He then served as a law clerk for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Young was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan. He served as Chief Judge from 1997 to 2003. He assumed senior status on October 1, 2003. Young is married to the former Mary Ann O'Connor, and they have two children. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Young has been involved in a number of high-profile cases, including the prosecution of Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger, the conviction of former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, and the conviction of former Massachusetts Treasurer Timothy Cahill.
