He has also released several solo albums, including his debut solo album, Willie Young, in 1988. Young was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and grew up in the city's Leith district. He attended Leith Academy and then studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He began playing guitar at the age of 12 and soon formed a band with his brother Charlie. Young's career began in earnest when he and his brother formed The Proclaimers in 1983. The band released their debut album, This Is the Story, in 1987, and it was an instant success. The band went on to release several more albums, including Sunshine on Leith (1988), Hit the Highway (1994), and Persevere (2001). Young has also released several solo albums, including Willie Young (1988), The Best of Willie Young (1995), and The Very Best of Willie Young (2005).
