Wolfgang Wahlster is a German computer scientist and artificial intelligence researcher. He is the director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and professor of computer science at Saarland University. He is also a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. Wahlster studied computer science at the University of Saarland, where he received his doctorate in 1979. He then worked at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, and at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1985, he returned to Saarland University as a professor of computer science. In 1988, Wahlster founded the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which he has directed ever since. He has also served as the president of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) and the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ECCAI). Wahlster has received numerous awards for his work, including the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize, the German Future Prize, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is also a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
