Yaroslava Plaviuk is a Ukrainian politician who served as the President of Ukraine from 1994 to 2005. She was the first woman to hold the office. Plaviuk was born on 24 March 1926 in Bila, Ternopil Raion, Ukraine. She studied at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1950. Plaviuk began her political career in the Communist Party of Ukraine in the 1950s. She was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) in 1990 and served as the Speaker of the Parliament from 1992 to 1994. In 1994, she was elected as the President of Ukraine and served until 2005. During her tenure, she was credited with introducing economic reforms and improving the country's relations with the European Union. Plaviuk is a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Merit of Ukraine, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, and the Order of Liberty.
