Yasushi Akutagawa was a Japanese composer and music director. He is best known for his work on the soundtracks of Akira Kurosawa's films, including Rashomon, Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo. He also composed the music for the anime series Space Battleship Yamato. Akutagawa was born in Tabata, Tokyo, Japan, on 12 July 1925. He studied music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, graduating in 1949. He then joined the Toho Music Department, where he worked as a composer and music director. Akutagawa composed the music for over 100 films, including Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and The Hidden Fortress. He also composed the music for the anime series Space Battleship Yamato. He won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Music in 1957 for his work on Rashomon. Akutagawa died on 15 February 1989 in Tokyo, Japan, at the age of 63.
