Yona Okoth was born in 1926 in Uganda. He was a Ugandan politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1962 to 1966. He was also the first African to be appointed to the United Nations Security Council. Okoth was educated at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and at the University of London. He was a member of the Uganda Legislative Council from 1958 to 1962. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1962 and served until 1966. In 1966, Okoth was appointed to the United Nations Security Council, becoming the first African to serve on the Council. He served on the Council until 1971. Okoth was also a member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and served as the OAU's representative to the United Nations from 1971 to 1975. Okoth died in 1975 at the age of 75. He was survived by his wife and four children.
