Yusuf Idris was an Egyptian writer and playwright. He was born in Faqous, Sharqia, Kingdom of Egypt, on 19 May 1927. He studied at the University of Cairo and graduated with a degree in medicine in 1951. He worked as a doctor for a few years before turning to writing full-time. Idris wrote short stories, novels, plays, and essays. He was a pioneer of the modern Arabic short story, and his works often explored the lives of the poor and marginalized in Egyptian society. He was also a vocal critic of the Egyptian government and its policies. Idris was awarded the State Prize for Literature in 1967 and the Egyptian Order of Merit in 1975. He died in Cairo on 28 December 1991.
